Tyson Foods Under Fire For Workplace Safety Violations.

The United Stated Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) cited Tyson Foods, Inc. last month for workplace safety violations that endangered the lives of workers at one of its factories.

On November 18, 2013, OSHA announced that the agency was citing Tyson Foods for permitting four workplace safety violations that had led to one of its workers suffering a horrific, life-altering personal injury. According to the OSHA report, a worker on one of Tyson’s assembly lines sustained a severed hand when attempting to clear a jam in an unguarded conveyor belt.

The OSHA report revealed that workers neglected simple and obvious workplace safety protocols and procedures. The report also showed that Tyson management was fully aware of the safety procedure violations, but took absolutely no actions to re-train the workers or to fire workers who persistently violated safety protocols. OSHA also cited Tyson for failure to create safe stairways, safeguard the conveyor belts and using unsafe equipment.

OSHA fined Tyson $147,000 for its worker safety violations. The company has also been placed on periodic examination status as part of the Severe Violator Enforcement Program. This program is aimed at getting an employer up to the workplace safety standards set by federal rules and regulations.
