Federal Statistics Show States With Most Dangerous Workplaces.

A new study based upon numbers from the United States Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics indicates that Maine is the most dangerous state for workers, with 1.4 serious injuries and illnesses for every 100 workers.  Indiana (1.1) and California (1.0) rounded out the top three.

The study, published by the Social Security Disability Insurance representation firm, Allsup, considered personal injuries sustained by workers which resulted in job transfers or restricted duties.

New York and the District of Columbia had the lowest rates of serious injury, at 0.1 per 100 workers.  Massachusetts tied for the fifth least dangerous state, with 0.4 serious injuries per 100 workers.

The study did not identify the causes of different rates of injuries in each state, but noted that the ways in which states classify and report workplace injuries, and the different environmental and geographical make-ups of each state, likely were large factors.
