Family Of Hockey Player Announces Plan To Sue The National Hockey League Alleging Brain Injuries Caused His Untimely Death.

Steve Montador was a star ice hockey defenseman who played in 571 games for a number of NHL teams, including the Calgary Flames, Florida Panthers, Anaheim Ducks, Buffalo Sabres and the Chicago Blackhawks. He even played for the Boston Bruins during his long and memorable career. Like many hockey players, he suffered from countless concussions and other injuries. According to a lawsuit soon to be filed by his family, these concussions may have cost Montador his life. Montador was found dead in his home this past February. An autopsy confirmed the “widespread presence” of concussion-related brain damage.

According to WorkersCompensation.com, Montador’s family is far from the first to file suit against the NHL. In fact, dozens of other lawsuits have been filed alleging that the league did not inform players about the risks that concussions play in chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE). CTE is a degenerative brain condition, which can only be diagnosed after death. The condition causes an athlete’s brain to slowing decay over time as a result of repeated concussions.
