BP Settles Civil and Criminal Claims with US Government With Regard to the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill.

British Petroleum (BP), the oil company responsible for the 2010 deadly oil rig explosion and ensuing oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, has agreed to settle the civil and criminal claims brought against it by the US government. The settlement is for a record $4.5 billion.

BP plead guilty to 14 criminal charges, which included 11 felony counts of misconduct which led to the wrongful deaths of 11 workers on the Deepwater Horizon oil rig, located 50 miles off the coast of Louisiana. The criminal charges stem from a negligent or intentional misrepresentation of the results of a pressure test conducted on the oil rig prior to the massive explosion.

The settlement amount will be paid in several installment plans of varying lengths. $4 billion will be paid over a period of five years, while a $525 million settlement with the federal Securities and Exchange Commission will be paid in installments over a period of three years.

The fines include a record $1.25 billion in criminal penalties.

The 2010 work site explosion accident tragically took the lives of 11 oil rig workers, and spilled over 205 millions of gallons of crude oil into the Gulf of Mexico, devastating local wildlife and local businesses and industries.
