Two Electrical Linemen Died After Massachusetts Construction Site Accident.

Massachusetts authorities are investigating a job site accident involving a boom and crane that took the lives of two electrical linemen in Bourne, Massachusetts this past Saturday, April 12, 2014.

According to officials from the Bourne, Massachusetts Fire Department, John Loughran of Quincy and Joseph Boyd III of Fall River, both 34 years-old, were working in a basket lift and the end of a 140-foot boom held by a crane at a construction site in Bourne. The two workers were doing electrical work, when the crane suddenly tipped over. The boom, which was extended to maximum length of 140 feet, flipped sending the workers plummeting to the ground. The firefighters stated that the workers’ fall was likely even more than 140 feet, as much as 170 feet, because they landed inside a gravel pit approximately 30 feet below ground level.

Both men were pronounced dead at the scene of the work accident after falling into the gravel pit.

According to officials from the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), the killed workers’ employer, Mass Bay Electrical, was cited nine years ago for several violations of worker safety laws. Two of the violation related to aerial lift safety, although OSHA later cleared the company as having complied with deficiency orders. OSHA has opened an investigation into this work accident in order to determine whether the contractor violated any workplace safety laws or regulations.
